Local Artist’s Success in Major National Art Exhibition

Work by local artist Ingrid Barber has been selected from a record number of over 1,800 entries to appear alongside paintings, sculptures, drawings and prints by some of Britain’s leading artists. The Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition will be on display at Mall Galleries from the 4th to 14th July.
Ingrid has lived in Cheam for ten years and has an active artistic involvement in the area.  She took her art and design degree at Kingston College as a mature student, aged fifty, and has been practising ever since. Ingrid represented Sutton in Minden, Germany on a cultural exchange in 2015 and in 2017 exhibited at the Honeywood Museum, Carshalton with ‘The Somme’.
This year sees her taking up residence in Oaks Park Studio 9, where a new body of work about human dysfunction is underway. The Mall Gallery have chosen one of Ingrid’s large-scale pieces for their exhibition. It’s entitled ‘Cheese on the Door, Where’s my Stew?’ and portrays a land where cheese – specifically, smoked Austrian as found on a ‘70s English boarding house cheeseboard – is mysteriously discovered perching on top of a bedroom door. That enigma, however, pales into insignificance next to the more pressing matter of what’s for tea? The wonders all around us are swallowed up by the ceaseless conversations of the mind. Presence is a popular concept in this crazy world we live in now but hardly any of us actually achieve it. We’re too busy worrying about the stew…
The Royal Society of British Artists (RBA) is dedicated to promoting the highest standards of skill, concept and draughtsmanship in painting, sculpture, printmaking and drawing.
The RBA hold an open submission exhibition in central London every year. Founded in 1823, the RBA was originally set up to rival the Royal Academy. Today, the Society prides itself on exhibiting an eclectic mix of work in varied media.

Twin Town art exhibition, Minden, Germany June 20-21, 2015.

“Die Bildner”, an exhibition in Germany featuring international artists from the twinned towns of Sutton in England, Apeldoorn in Holland, and Gagny in France was held for the first time in an extensive artists’ workshop just outside Minden. Ingrid Barber, mixed media artist and Jeremy Clark, ceramic sculptor were invited by Arts Network Sutton to show their work at the exhibition, which was held at a re-vamped ex-British army base. The twin town showcase was expanded by local artists opening up their workshops to display a wonderful range and quality of sculpture and paintings.

The exhibition was very well attended over the two days and the Bürgermeister of Minden was highly impressed. An article appeared in the weekend newspaper with artists interviews and at the close of the show the organiser, Eva Kutschera, presented certificates of participation signed by the Bürgermeister of Minden.

The German organisers are keen to build on this event, moving it to other twinned towns in future years, with their eye on Sutton in 2016.
